Print technologies

Direct thermal and thermal transfer are two different methods of label printing that use heat to create images or text. The difference between these two methods lies in the technology and the materials used. Below is an explanation of both processes.

1. Direct Thermal Printing

Operation: Direct thermal printing uses no ink or ribbon. Instead, the label itself is coated with a special thermal layer that blackens when exposed to heat from the print head.
Properties: No ribbon required;
The print is made directly onto the label material;
Suitable for short-term use as the print is susceptible to fading from exposure to heat, light, or friction;
Often used for temporary labels, such as shipping labels, receipts, or wristbands.
Advantages: Cheaper because no ribbon is required;
Less maintenance caused by fewer moving parts and consumables;
Disadvantages: Less durable because the print may fade due to sunlight, heat, or chemical exposure;
Not suitable for long-term storage or harsh environments.

2. Thermal Transfer Printing

Operation: Thermal transfer printing uses an ink ribbon. The print head heats the ribbon, transferring the ink onto the label material.
Properties: Ribben is required;
The print is not made on the material itself, but via the ink from the ribbon onto the label;
Suitable for long-term use, where the print is resistant to heat, light, and chemical exposure;
Common materials include paper, polyester, polypropylene, or other synthetic materials.
Advantages: Highly durable and sharp prints that last a long time;
Suitable for harsh environments, such as outdoor use, industrial use, and warehouses.
Disadvantages: It is more expensive because of the extra cost of the ink ribbon;
More complex printing technology with ribbons that need to be replaced regularly.

Conclusion:


Direct thermal is ideal for short-term applications where the print does not require long-term durability, such as shipping labels and receipts.
Thermal transfer is better for long-lasting or robust applications, such as inventory labels, product labels, or labels exposed to demanding conditions.
